Pop is hot, rock is not, according to Billboard Top 40

Landslide, rocks are falling, Falling down ’round our very heads, We tried but you were yawning, Look again, rock is dead. Pete Townshend, Long Live Rock

Rock continues to lose ground as pure pop becomes the golden genre of Billboard’s Mainstream Top 40 charts, with a 60% share of all the Top 10 songs within the past five years.

According to Billboard, rock tracks have fell out of favor, with a mere 14% of all top 10’s annually, since 2007. Quite a change from 1996 when the genre garnered 56% of all Top 10’s.
